The Porcelain Veneer Procedure
We start by talking about the smile you want. We look at color, shape, spacing, and how your teeth meet. Then we tell you whether veneers are the right tool, or whether bonding or whitening would do the job.
Not much tooth structure needs to be removed. Porcelain can be made as thin as half a millimeter and still be strong once it is bonded onto the tooth. The shell is fragile on its own, but bonding makes it extremely strong.
Your veneers are custom-made for your teeth. They come in multiple colors. They also pick up a little of the color from the teeth under and beside them. That is what often makes them hard to notice.
Veneers can also close gaps between teeth, even gaps braces cannot fully close when there is not enough space. Some patients call the result instant orthodontics, because the teeth look straighter without being moved.
How Veneers Differ From Crowns
A crown typically covers the entire outer surface of the tooth. A veneer usually goes only on the front surface, which leaves the back of the tooth alone. The steps are very similar, but far less tooth is removed for a veneer.
In rare cases we place a veneer on the back of a tooth. That is usually to change your bite or give your teeth more height. We will explain it if that applies to you.

What is a porcelain veneer?
It is a thin shell of porcelain, custom-made to fit over the front of a tooth. It can change how that tooth looks: its shape, its size, how it sits, and its color. It is bonded in place, which is what makes it strong.
How is a veneer different from a crown?
A crown covers the whole outer surface of the tooth. A veneer sits only on the front, so the back of the tooth is left alone. Much less tooth is removed for a veneer.
Will my veneers look fake?
They should not. Veneers come in multiple colors and are custom-made for you. They also pick up the color of the underlying and adjacent teeth to a small degree, which helps them blend in.
Can veneers close a gap in my front teeth?
Often, yes. Veneers can be used to close gaps between teeth, especially when braces cannot close them all the way for lack of space. We look at the gap and tell you if veneers are the right fit.
Should I whiten before getting veneers?
Porcelain does not whiten the way natural teeth do, the same as a crown or a large filling. So we pick the final shade together first and plan your smile around it. We go over your options at your consultation.
