What happens
between the visits.

The post goes into the bone first. Then the bone grows around it and locks it in place. That is called osseointegration, which simply means the bone takes hold of the post. It is why a finished implant feels solid instead of fitted.

That part cannot be rushed. We usually let the fixture integrate for a few months before we add the connector and the crown on top. Think of setting a metal post in wet concrete. You would not want to move it while the concrete sets.

In some cases we can place the post the same day a tooth comes out. If there was an infection, or a bone defect where an abscessed tooth was, it is often better to let the area settle first. We tell you which case you are before we begin, not after.

How many appointments should I expect?

Why the wait between the post and the crown?

The bone has to grow around the post and lock it in. Loading it too early risks the whole thing. A few months of patience is what makes it last.

Can the post go in the day the tooth comes out?

Sometimes. If there is infection, or a defect in the bone where an abscessed tooth was, it is usually better to let it clear up first.

Will there be a gap in my smile while I heal?

Not always. Some patients get a smaller temporary over the area so the space does not look empty in the meantime. We will tell you whether that fits your case.
