as they grow.

At every checkup we look at more than the teeth. We check alignment, wear and decay, and we look at the cheeks, lips, tongue and gums. We watch for thumb sucking and for tongue tie, which is tight tissue under the tongue.

Crowding and space are the big ones. There has to be room for the permanent teeth that are still coming, and we can see the shortfall before you can. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven.

Starting arch alignment early can sometimes help your child avoid more complicated full braces as a teenager. We are not in a hurry to start anything. We are in a hurry to look.

When should my child see someone about braces?

We take comprehensive dental x-rays that show what is happening below the gums and how the teeth and jaws are developing. That is how we see the permanent teeth before they arrive.
