How a Visit Works
A child’s visit follows a simple order. We take comprehensive dental x-rays that show what is happening below the gums and how the teeth and jaws are developing. Then we do a thorough exam of the cheeks, lips, tongue, gums and teeth, checking alignment, wear and decay.
Next comes the dental cleaning, done by the dentist or the hygienist. If there is a cavity, we take care of it. We may also place preventive sealants to protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
We finish with education. We show your child how to brush and floss, and we talk about nutrition and avoiding sugary drinks and snacks. We often have a small goodie basket with trinkets for the kids.
Why Early Visits Matter
Regular checkups help prevent dental problems from developing in the first place. Cavities and gum disease can be identified and treated early, before they cause pain or discomfort for your child.
Children’s teeth and jaws are still developing. We watch for thumb sucking, tongue tie (tight tissue under the tongue), crowding, alignment, and space for the permanent teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Starting arch alignment early can sometimes help your child avoid more complicated full braces as a teenager.
Good oral health is closely linked to overall health. Poor oral health has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and respiratory problems. Habits built in childhood carry into adult life.

FAQs about
Pediatric Dentistry
When should my child first see a dentist?
Start around their first birthday, or when the first tooth erupts. If there are no dental issues beforehand, those first visits are simple checkups. Starting early makes visits simpler and more fun for your child.
How can I make the visit go well?
Use positive language when you talk about it at home. Role play by taking turns being the dentist and counting each other’s teeth. Bring a comfort item, and consider a small reward for good behavior during the visit.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants are a preventive coating placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They help keep decay out of the deep grooves. We can often clean those grooves with air abrasion first, without drilling or any anesthetic.
When should my child see an orthodontist?
Orthodontists recommend a first check by age 7. We watch alignment and spacing at regular visits. Early arch alignment treatment can sometimes help your child avoid full braces later.
My child is scared of the dentist. What can you do?
That is common, and regular visits are the fix. Coming in often helps your child feel comfortable in the dental chair and reduces anxiety over time. We explain things in kid-friendly words and go at your child’s pace.
