For a non-urgent visit, call our team to arrange an appointment. A loose braces bracket or a small chip might feel like an emergency. Those are usually ok to wait a few hours.

Some things need a hospital, not a dentist. Uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that affects your breathing, means you should go to the emergency room. A large cut to the face or a dislocated jaw means you should contact a medical doctor.

If a tooth gets knocked out, the sooner you get into the office the better. Gently rinse it with water and try to put it back in the socket within a few minutes. The blood supply and the nerve may reconnect. Even then it may not stay in, so time matters. Do not scrub the surface of the tooth, because that can destroy the fibers that would reattach.

If you cannot put it back in, keep it moist. Hold it in your mouth wet with saliva, or put it in a container with milk or water. Then call us and come straight in.

If a filling falls out and it is not sensitive, avoid chewing on that area and contact the office. A little putty from the pharmacy can prevent bacterial infection and sensitivity in the meantime. If a crown comes off, gently rinse off the debris inside and try to replace it if there is enough tooth structure. A thin coating of tooth cement from the pharmacy, or even toothpaste, can hold it temporarily. Do not wait weeks or months, because decay can set in and the adjacent teeth might shift.
