How a Visit Works
Your new patient exam starts with a conversation. We want to know your long-term goals for your oral health. Then we look at where things stand today.
We often take a set of digital x-rays. They let us check your bone and your teeth for cavities, bone loss, or infection. We also check the height of the gum support around your teeth. Deeper pockets are hard to clean at home, so we flag them early.
Then we talk about what we found. If you are missing teeth, have decay starting, or have heavy wear or crooked teeth, we will suggest options. The goal is to improve the longevity of your teeth and your smile.
We do basic teeth cleaning for routine care. If calculus has hardened below the gumline, we may suggest a deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing. We numb the area first so we can clean the roots comfortably.
How Cleanings and Exams Work
Plaque hardens into calculus when it sits on a tooth. Once it hardens, brushing and flossing will not take it off. A cleaning removes it before it irritates the gums.
Some things raise your risk. Smoking, diabetes, a lot of coffee, and certain medications can all make buildup worse. If that sounds like you, we may suggest more frequent cleanings.

What happens at my first visit?
Unless you are coming in for an emergency, we update a set of x-rays and do a comprehensive exam. We review your medical history with you. Then we talk through your goals and agree on a plan together.
How often should I get a cleaning?
Most people do well with routine cleanings on a regular schedule. If you smoke, have diabetes, drink a lot of coffee, or take certain medications, we may suggest coming in more often. We will tell you what we recommend and why.
What is a deep cleaning?
A deep cleaning is also called scaling and root planing. It removes hardened buildup from the roots below the gumline. We numb the area first so you stay comfortable.
Do you take my dental insurance?
We are in-network with Delta Premier. We are happy to run a complimentary benefits check and verify your coverage before your visit. You also get an estimate of your coverage and copayment before any major treatment.
Are digital x-rays safe?
Digital x-rays use far less radiation than older film x-rays. They also give more detail, and we can enlarge an area to look closer. We can email them to a local specialist when we work together on your care.
