The fixture is the post. It goes into the jawbone and takes the place of the root you lost. It is titanium, and the bone grows around it and holds it.

The abutment is the connector. It sits on the post and sticks up through the gum. It is the piece nobody ever sees and the piece that makes the last part possible.

The crown is the tooth. It goes on the abutment, it is shaped and shaded to match what is next to it, and it is the only part you will think about afterwards. Because the post replaces the root, it keeps supporting the bone, and the healthy teeth on either side of the gap are left alone. A bridge would need those teeth drilled down.

Do I get the crown the same day as the post?

Sometimes, but it is not the usual path. Unless the bone support and the stability are clearly strong, we let the fixture integrate for a few months first.

Why not just do a bridge?

A bridge needs the healthy teeth either side drilled down to carry it. An implant stands on its own and leaves those teeth alone, and it keeps supporting the bone where the root used to be.

Is the post really permanent?

Implants are meant to stay. Brush and floss around it like a natural tooth, keep your cleanings, and we check the implant and the bone around it at those visits.

How long is the trip from Naperville?
