The Crown and Bridge Procedure
First we prepare the tooth and shape it for the crown. Then we scan your teeth with our digital scanner. The scan is off to the lab within minutes.
We place an acrylic temporary tooth while the lab works. The temporary protects your tooth from sensitivity. It also holds the spacing between your teeth. And it keeps the gum from growing over the edge of the crown at the base.
We do our crowns in two visits so our dental lab ceramist can make a custom porcelain restoration. At the second visit we remove the temporary, check the fit and the bite, and cement the crown. For a bridge, we prepare the adjacent teeth for crowns that connect and fill in the space created by the missing tooth.
How Crowns and Bridges Work
A crown is what most people call a cap. It is put over a tooth and covers the outer surface, holding the tooth together. That is why we use one when a tooth fractures, is chipped, or has had a root canal.
A bridge uses the teeth on either side of a gap as supports. Crowns go on those teeth, and a replacement tooth connects between them. The whole piece is cemented in as one unit.
Materials matter. We offer gold crowns, porcelain crowns, and porcelain fused to gold. Many of our patients appreciate the newer all-zirconium crowns and bridges, which have the strength of metal with the esthetics of porcelain.
