How a Visit Works
We start by looking at which teeth are left and how much bone you have. We discuss dentures, partial dentures, and the option that includes dental implants for a more natural feeling restoration. We also talk about your budget, because it is part of the decision.
A denture is an acrylic, tissue-colored base with either porcelain or plastic teeth on it. A partial is either acrylic or a metal framework with acrylic on it, made to replace a section of missing teeth. Both are made to fit your mouth.
Some mouths do not have enough bone to steady a denture or partial. If that is your case, or you want something more permanent, we can step up to dental implants. We lay the options out side by side so you can choose with your eyes open.
How Dentures and Implants Work
Dentures typically sit on gum tissue, which is somewhat flexible. Implants give the denture something solid to hold onto. A connector called a locator snaps the denture or partial in place, which adds much more stability and makes cleaning easier.
The next step up is what we call a hybrid denture. It has a metal frame with denture teeth or porcelain teeth on it. The frame is screwed into implants spread along the jaw. That is called a fixed implant-supported hybrid denture.
When multiple teeth are removed, the bone underneath is no longer stimulated and often dissolves away. As it shrinks, the face can start to cave in and look gaunt. A denture or partial offers cheek and lip support in a way a crown or bridge may not.

What is the difference between a denture and a partial?
A denture replaces all the teeth in an arch. A partial replaces a section of missing teeth and uses your remaining teeth for support. Partials are either acrylic or a metal framework with acrylic on it.
Why does my denture wobble?
A denture rests on gum tissue, and gum tissue gives a little. If there was significant bone loss and a lot of excess gum tissue, the denture may wobble when you chew. Partial dentures often have one end supported by a tooth while the other end lifts up and down.
Can implants hold my denture in place?
Yes. Placing dental implants gives the denture anchors, which adds a lot of stability. A connector called a locator snaps the denture on and off for easy cleaning. The anchors can be placed before, after, or during the making of the denture.
Will dentures change how my face looks?
They can help. When teeth are missing, the bone shrinks and the face can start to cave in around that area. A denture or partial adds back cheek and lip support. It can also increase the vertical dimension of your bite when there has been severe bone loss.
